Hemispheres

Little help??

Tannah is struggling with the concept of hemispheres. That it will be summer here at christmas and winter in the USA (thank-you Disney Santa Buddies movie).

We have a globe and I'm trying to explain it that way.

How would you explain the concept to a 5 year old?

Audrey got out her torch one day to be the sun with the globe, you could model the movement of the earth by day and season like that maybe? Very effective in a dark room :)

We used a tennis ball for the sun, and a golf ball with an equator drawn on it for the earth and showed the boys how the earth is slightly tilted and spins as it goes around the sun... They we 5 and 3 at the time at got that...

I think start with something a little easier to show on the glob... the whole day/night thing. Use your torch to show that when it is day here it is night there.... My girls got that concept in the more concrete way pretty quickly. They now get the seasons thing but I don't think they really grasp any kind of understanding behind that - it's much more a leap of faith thanks to disney!
